Greece has once again excelled in the Blue Flag awards for 2024, securing a top position among 52 countries. The country’s pristine beaches, known for their water quality and facilities, have garnered significant international recognition.
This year, Greece secured the second place globally, with 625 beaches awarded the coveted Blue Flag, marking it as a premier destination for clean and well-maintained coastal areas. The Halkidiki region, located approximately 1.5 hours from the Greek capital, Athens, led the charge with an impressive 95 awarded beaches. The island of Rhodes followed closely with 54 awarded beaches.
In the Attica region, which encompasses Athens, 17 beaches received the Blue Flag. Kefalonia, another popular island destination, boasted 16 awarded beaches. The island of Lefkada, however, had only two awarded beaches this year, notably missing its famous Kathisma and Agios Nikitas beaches, which have been recognized in the past.
Other notable mentions include Mykonos and Tinos, each with one awarded beach. Paros had four, Naxos three, and Santorini, a favorite among tourists, featured nine awarded beaches. Surprisingly, Mykonos’ renowned Psarou beach was not on the list this year, and neither was Simos beach in Elafonisos, one of the most famous in Greece and abroad.
